Introduction / History

The Acholis of northern Uganda are part of larger Luo people. Acholi people were once largely nomadic and did not embrace collective identity until the 1800s.

They are located in Uganda s districts of Gulu, Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader, and Agago. A smaller number are in South Sudan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most are farmers and pastoralists. They have gone through a traumatic time of war.

Most of them are Catholic, and they also believe in their traditional gods.

What Are Their Needs?

They need Bible schools, hospitals, schools for their children, etc.

Some are affected by poverty and war trauma.
