Introduction / History

The Ahan are a small sub-tribe of the Yoruba. They are among the Ekiti and Akoko people of present day Ekiti and Ondo States of Nigeria as well as among the Okun people of Kogi State. They have a lot in common with the Yoruba among whom they are "geographically sandwiched." The Ahan speak a dialect of Yoruba otherwise called Ahan. No Christian resources are currently available in Ahan. Linguists will need to do a survey determine whether Ahan has a written script and whether a Bible translation is necessary.

Where Are they Located?

They are found mostly in Ekiti state (Omuo Ekiti), Kogi state (Ijumu LGA) and Ondo state in southwestern Nigeria: (Akoko North West LGA, Ajowa and Igashi towns).

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Ahan people live much like the Yoruba people. The Ahan are an agricultural people who also raise chickens, goats and cattle. Their main crops include beans, yams, maize, millet, bananas and melons. They sell palm oil, cocoa and peanuts and buy things they are unable to make for themselves such as tools, farm equipment and cell phones. Village elders settle legal disputes and deal with outsiders.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are believers among the Ahan, but syncretism is common. There are a few Muslims among them, too.

What Are Their Needs?

The Ahan people need adequate rain for their crops and their livestock so they can live lives free of want and poverty. They need modern medical care and good schools that will help the next generation to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

The Ahan people need the blessings of the Risen Christ who has conquered death. He alone can give them abundant life if they are willing to accept His guidance. They need the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, the judge of all mankind.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to give the Ahan people teachable and understanding hearts.
Pray that a strong movement of the Holy Spirit will bring entire Ahan families into a rich experience of God's blessing.
Pray for the Ahan culture to be renewed and enhanced by a work of the Holy Spirit and shaped into a God-centered and God-honoring mold.
Pray for the Lord to thrust out workers who will be compelled to nurture a disciple making movement among the Ahan people.
Pray for Ahan families to be drawn by the Holy Spirit to seek forgiveness through Christ alone, and to understand the adequacy of Christ's work on the cross.
