Introduction / History

Cayubaba is the name of a tribe in Bolivia. It s also the name of their language, which is dying. Their first contact with Westerners was in 1693 when they encountered Jesuit missionary priest, P. Agust n Zapata in 1693. A couple of years later the Jesuits established the Mission of Exaltation of the Holy Cross. By the beginning of the 1800s, the Cayabuaba language and culture were fading.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Cayubaba are mostly farmers who grow squash, beans, corn, casava, yucca, bananas, sugar cane and sweet potatoes. They raise livestock for their meat and milk.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Cayubaba have longstanding ties with the Roman Catholic Church. They are Christianized, but like most tribes in this region, they blend Catholicism with traditional religion.

What Are Their Needs?

The Cayubaba need better health care. This is a need that is hard to meet in such a mountainous nation.
