Introduction / History

When the Spanish first reached the land of the Chimilas their population was in the thousands and they lived in a vast area. Today, they are centered in a small region of Colombia in the Andes Mountains.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They Chimila economy is based on a mixture of growing corn, hunting and fishing. Some raise livestock and birds. Some are day laborers, and others sell baskets and other handmade goods. Men and women share tasks on their farms. Men clear the land using their machetes. Women do the harvesting.

What Are Their Beliefs?

A little over half of the Chimilas adhere to ethnic religion. The other half are Christian, mostly Roman Catholic. They have enough Bible-believing Christians to reach others in their region.

What Are Their Needs?

The Chimilas need protection.
