The Hainanese migrated to Cambodia more than 500 years ago from one of China’s southern islands. They settled in Kampot Province on the Cambodian coast. Originally, they came as farmers, establishing large pepper plantations.
Many Hainanese still live in Kampot Province and Phnom Penh. They work hard, rarely taking time off from work. They have distinguished themselves as experts in the food catering business. Many manage coffee shops, Chinese noodle houses, and other businesses in the food industry.
Parents encourage their children to study hard in school. With much of their time spent in school or at work, the Hainanese have little time for entertainment or socializing.
The Hainanese adhere to traditional Chinese religion. This can include aspects of Daoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. Commonly they worship the spirits of their ancestors, believing these spirits can affect their future and their fortune. Therefore, they make offerings and build shrines and altars in their honor. The Hainanese have their own gods that other Han Chinese people do not worship. Those in China are far more open to the gospel than those who have moved to Cambodia.
The Hainanese of Cambodia need to be freed from the bondage of spiritism and false religion. While they are relatively well-off economically, materialism and emphasis on worldly success dulls any sense of spiritual need.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to drive the Hainanese people in Cambodia into the loving arms of Jesus.
Pray for Hainanese disciples to make more disciples who will multiply with more disciples.
Ask the Lord to bless their businesses as a testimony of his power and goodness and to reveal himself as the source of their blessing.
Ask God to raise up loving workers from the Chinese church to share the gospel with the Hainanese.
