Introduction / History

The Ilsavan are a sub-ethnic group of Azerbaijanis, living near the border between Azerbaijan and Iran. Their name means "lover of the Shah" or "adherents of the Shah", and they have been loyal subjects of the Iranian government for many years. Most live in Iran, but there may be some still residing in Azerbaijan.

What Are Their Lives Like?

As nomadic shepherds, their lives are very difficult by our standards. They must move their livestock to even find adequate water or grazing lands. Their diet is often restricted to what their livestock can provide, meat and milk. Semi-nomadic peoples are often viewed as rivals or as a nuisance by settled people groups.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Ilsavan are Shia Muslims.

What Are Their Needs?

There may be no followers of Jesus today among the Ilsavan people. It will take a miracle for them to hear and respond to the life changing gospel.

Prayer Points

Pray for mature Christians to be sent to teach them.
Please pray the Lord will grant the Ilsavan a growing desire to know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior and Lord.
Pray the Lord will open their spiritual eyes to see who Jesus is.
Pray for good schools and hospitals in the Ilsavan homeland.
