Introduction / History

South Marquesan is one of the largest traditional languages in French Polynesia. It is differentiated from the North Marquesan dialect.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Young adults and teens who speak the South Marquesan language and live in French Polynesia want to leave to establish themselves. There are few economic opportunities, so they need to go elsewhere to find adequate work. Most people there are either elementary school-aged, middle-aged, or elderly.

What Are Their Beliefs?

South Marquesans, like the other peoples of Polynesia, are Christian and have been for many decades. Like others who have had a church for more than 100 years, faith often weakens or erodes and is often replaced by secularism. Yet many hold onto faith in Jesus Christ and can offer his hope to others.

What Are Their Needs?

South Marquesans need economic opportunities. It should not be necessary for them to leave their home to find adequate work.

They also need refrigeration. Food is seldom frozen or preserved, so it has a short shelf life.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to raise up South Marquesans to expand their economy so they can keep their families intact.
Pray for a powerful work of the Holy Spirit to revive their churches, bringing forth good fruit.
Pray that soon South Marquesan disciples will disciple others.
Pray that those who venture far from home will become Christ-bearers to the lost.
