Introduction / History

Numerous issues negatively impact Tera families: farms are damaged when natural disasters strike, Western and other cultures introduce unwanted social ills, and a major world religion is growing. The sad news is Christians and churches have become complacent over the years. The good news is that many people have seen the widely distributed "JESUS" film in their Tera heart language, and local churches have designed follow-up programs. It is clear that Scripture they deeply understand is essential for discipleship and spiritual growth.

When missionaries brought the Gospel in 1930, they translated John's Gospel. Recent mother tongue translators completed the Gospel of Luke and produced the "JESUS" film. Now this people group wants to complete their New Testament, and eventually they would like a full Tera Bible. Because another major religion is growing, church leaders are motivated to strengthen Christians in their commitment to Christ and to share the Gospel more widely. Tera farmers in northeastern Nigeria practice traditional African religion and Islam, which has grown in popularity. Few Tera speakers understand God's Word in the available regional language. Today 40 percent are nominal Christians, they've requested mother tongue Scripture to read and share.
