Introduction / History

The Muslim Tukams are among the original people from Sudan s Nuba Hills. They speak Tagoi, one of the local languages. Ironically, this mountainous land was once a refuge for those fleeing slave raids.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They have tight-knit families that provide them with identity and the security of belonging. Families work together and defend one another. They distrust outsiders, who have represented a threat for many years.

These farmers cultivate sorghum, millet, and sesame as their primary food sources. For sale and trade, they grow peanuts and tobacco. Every family raises livestock: cattle, goats, and chickens. Women do the cooking, child rearing, and vegetable gardening, while the men tend to the livestock. A typical meal includes millet porridge flavored with sauces made from okra, meat, or beans.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all Tukam people are Sunni Muslims who also adhere to tribal religious practices. Folk Muslims believe that Allah is supreme, but he doesn t deal with local issues like sickness, etc.

What Are Their Needs?

There are probably no Christ followers among the Tukams. There might be Christians nearby, but there is much animosity between the two religious communities.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to raise his chosen ambassadors to the Tukams and other Muslim people in Sudan.
Pray for God to bring peace and justice between the two religious communities.
Pray that soon Tukams will be discipling others in Christ s ways.
