Introduction / History

The Devhar, also go by the names of Deva or Devi. They are a scheduled caste community which means they have low status in Hindu society. They live primarily in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Traditionally they were scavengers and common farm workers. They have been marginalized and disadvantaged economically. Recently the Indian government has attempted to help uplift the Devhar people through reservation quotas for higher education and government jobs. They are not where they want to be economically.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They have their own traditions and practices. They worship a variety of deities, including Hindu gods and goddesses, and have their own set of rituals and customs related to birth, marriage, and death. Yet officially they are Hindu.

What Are Their Needs?

Like all other peoples of the world, this people group needs the blessings and guidance that only Jesus Christ can offer.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to bless this community economically and spiritually.

Ask God to raise up Devhar who are more desirous to know the truth than to stay on the broad road.

Ask God to send loving, committed workers to the Devhar in the near future.

Pray the Devhar would no longer be hidden away from the influence of Christ.

Pray for many of them to make disciples who will make even more disciples.
