Ancient Hindu literature refers to Goa as, "the Paradise of India." In the third century BC, Goa was part of the Mauryan Empire. When that empire declined it was taken over by a series of regional Hindu dynasties. Goa was held by either Hindu or Muslim empires until being conquered by the Portuguese in 1510. In the 1500s, St. Francis Xavier, a Roman Catholic saint, worked among the Goanese, winning a high percentage of them to Catholicism. The Portuguese held onto Goa for over 400 years. It remained with the Portuguese even after India’s independence in 1947 but was finally annexed by India in 1961. At that time a large number of Goanese left India for either former British or former Portuguese colonies. Those countries include Mozambique, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Canada, Kenya, Uganda and Australia.
No matter where they live, Konkani speakers read the “Goanese Voice,” to stay abreast of what is happening in Goa. One can find Goanese in any number of professions. They can be oil workers, sailors, shop owners or medical doctors.
Having a strong Portuguese influence, the Goanese are usually Roman Catholic. The gospel is strongest among them in Uganda. The Goanese have been instrumental in strengthening Roman Catholicism in Kenya.
The Goanese need to put all their hope and faith in Jesus Christ no matter where they live.
Pray for a Holy Spirit-led revival among Goanese people all over the world, drawing them to the only savior.
Pray for Goanese disciples to make disciples of both Hindus and marginal Roman Catholics.
Pray for the Goanese to feel God’s presence and mercy as they go about their daily business.
