The Hindu Mandia people in Odisha have a background primarily connected to agriculture and traditional crafts. They primarily speak Odia, the predominant language in Odisha.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mandia people live in rural villages, focusing on farming and small-scale craftsmanship. They grow crops such as rice, lentils and vegetables. Many also engage in weaving, pottery and other artisanal crafts.

Their diet includes both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food, featuring staples like rice, lentils, vegetables and fish. Traditional dishes such as dalma (a lentil and vegetable stew) and machha besara (fish curry with mustard paste) are common in their meals. Weddings among the Mandia are elaborate, involving Hindu rituals like the exchange of garlands, sacred fire ceremonies, and celebrations with music and dance.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Mandia people practice Hinduism, worshiping various deities and observing numerous religious rituals and festivals such as Durga Puja, Diwali and Rath Yatra. Their belief system emphasizes values like dharma (duty), karma (actions and consequences), and ahimsa (non-violence). They conduct rituals and ceremonies to honor their ancestors and deities.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mandia people need better access to quality education to provide more opportunities for their children. Improved healthcare services are essential due to the limited availability of medical facilities and high rates of preventable diseases. Economic support through modern agricultural techniques, market access, and vocational training can enhance their livelihoods. Infrastructure development, including better roads, clean water supplies, and reliable electricity, will greatly benefit the Mandia community. Addressing these needs will help the Mandia people achieve greater socio-economic stability while preserving their traditional way of life.

Pray for laborers to be sent to these people with a passion to see them come to salvation in Christ.
Pray that the Holy Spirit would be opening and preparing their hearts to receive the gospel.
Pray that they would not see Christianity as an outside movement or religion, but they would see salvation as God’s redemption plan that he’s offered all along.
Pray for discipleship communities to grow and thrive among the Mandia people.
