Introduction / History

The Hindu Musti Chenchu people live primarily in the forests and hill regions of Andhra Pradesh, India. Historically, they have lived as hunter-gatherers, depending on the forest for their food, shelter and livelihood.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Over time, many Musti Chenchu have transitioned to small-scale agriculture and labor work, while some still maintain a deep connection to their traditional forest-based lifestyle. Most cultivate crops like millet, pulses and vegetables. However, some families continue to rely on forest resources, gathering fruits, honey and medicinal plants to support themselves. A few also work as laborers in nearby villages or towns to supplement their income. The community often lives in small, remote villages, with homes built from mud, thatch and other locally available materials.

Daily life for the Musti Chenchu revolves around family and community. Families often share responsibilities, whether working in the fields or gathering forest resources. While younger generations are increasingly seeking education and job opportunities outside their villages, many Musti Chenchu remain connected to their traditional way of life.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Musti Chenchu people practice Hinduism, worshiping deities such as Vishnu, Shiva and local gods associated with nature and the forest. They observe major Hindu festivals such as Diwali and Pongal, while also honoring local deities with rituals that reflect their connection to the land. These rituals often involve offerings to ensure good harvests and the well-being of their community.

Temples and shrines, both large and small, serve as important centers for worship in Musti Chenchu villages. Religious leaders guide the community in conducting ceremonies and observing festivals, which bring the village together for communal worship.

What Are Their Needs?

The Musti Chenchu people face several challenges, particularly related to education, healthcare and economic development. Many still rely on traditional farming and forest-gathering methods, which leaves them vulnerable to environmental changes and economic instability. Improved access to modern agricultural tools, sustainable farming practices and market opportunities for forest products would help stabilize their livelihoods.

Education remains limited in Musti Chenchu villages, with many children lacking access to quality schooling. Expanding educational opportunities would allow younger generations to pursue more diverse career paths. Additionally, healthcare services are scarce, with families having to travel long distances for medical care. Improving healthcare infrastructure in rural areas would greatly benefit the Musti Chenchu people, enhancing their overall quality of life.
