Mishing means "man of worthiness." The Miri are a scheduled tribe in northeastern Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

They are also called Mishing. They speak a Tibeto-Burman language and Hindi.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Cultivation and fishing are their main work. They also work as day laborers in agriculture.

They have cross-cousin marriages. The bereaved can marry again. They bury their dead away from their villages.

They eat all meats except beef. Their houses are built on stilts. They have a community council to look after their interests.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are Hindus by religion. The Mishing are also animists.
