Introduction / History

Sangar people were nomadic in their history. Eventually, they agreed with their rulers to settle.

Where Are they Located?

The Hindu Sangar people live on the west coast of India in the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Sangar people are farmers. Some raise cattle, and others work for the Border Security Force along the Pakistan border.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Sangar people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. They worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. Hindus believe that by performing rituals and good works that they will attain moksha or freedom from the endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are many forms of Hinduism, each with its own deities and beliefs.

The main yearly holidays of the Sangar people include Holi, the festival of colors and the start of spring / Diwali, the festival of lights / Navratri, the celebration of autumn / and Rama Navami, Rama's birthday.

What Are Their Needs?

Although audio, visual and written Bible resources are available in Marathi, their spoken language, they remain unreached with the truth of the gospel. Their greatest need is to understand the infinite love of Almighty God for them, and His provisional payment of the penalty for their sins. They need spiritual freedom given only by the Son who can make them "free indeed."
