China and Kazakhstan agreed on visa-free travel in early 1992, which led to 150 to 200 Chinese citizens entering Kazakhstan each day and not returning to China. Many Chinese traders began flowing into Kazakhstan. Chinese people in Kazakhstan speak Mandarin.

Originally, they worked as artisans and farmers. Eventually many invested in Kazakhstan businesses, and have become influential in their circles of influence. Kazakh people are becoming fearful that Chinese investors will use their land and business ownership in Kazakhstan to gradually exercise their influence and dominance.
