Introduction / History

The Kollan of Kerala speak, read and write in Malayalam.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Vishwakarma Kollan are traditionally blacksmiths but now many work in agriculture, as day laborers, goldsmiths, businessmen, or as office workers. The Kollan now have monogamous marriages, between one man and one woman. They prefer cross-cousin marriages arranged by their families. They allow for re-marriage after a divorce or if the spouse dies. On the death of the father, the oldest son takes charge of family matters. Their children are educated. They have an organization that looks after their needs.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Kollan people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kollan people need to put all their trust in Jesus Christ, the one who came to give abundant life to all who call on His name.

Prayer Points

Pray that the leaders of the Kollan come to Jesus Christ and lead their community into a Christ-ward movement. Pray that gospel materials and the internet will become easily available to them. Pray for a spiritual hunger that will lead them to the only Savior.
