Gamela is an indigenous community found in the northeastern region of Brazil, primarily in the state of Maranhão. They are one of the many indigenous groups in Brazil and are estimated to have a population of around 8,000 people.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Gamela people live off the land, so they have a keen interest in understanding their environment. They obtain food through farming and fishing.

The Gamela people have their own forms of music, dance, pottery and woven goods.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They believe that the land is connected with spiritual forces.

What Are Their Needs?

There have been serious conflicts between the Gamela people and Brazilian landowners. These people are no match for those with modern weapons. They are attempting to preserve their culture and way of life.
