Introduction / History

According to "Gamo Gofa Hiziboch Tarik," Gamo is the name of the people and their land. The name Gamo means "Lion," and the people are heroic and strong. The people are one of the main tribes of Ethiopia.

They are located in the southwest part of the country which is part of the East African Rift Valley. The region contains two Rift Valley lakes and the Nech Sar National Park, where the Gamos live.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Their primary means of subsistence is mixed agriculture. The Gamo people are excellent farmers who grow barley, 12 types of wheat, cassava, taro, and yams. They also sell fruit in stands.

Secondarily, they practice weaving. They produce some of Ethiopia’s traditional clothing.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Previously, they believed in nature like mountains, rivers, and the like. But now Protestantism is dominant, followed by Orthodox Christianity. Nevertheless, they continue to follow some traditional beliefs.

What Are Their Needs?

There is a lack of education and road access to join the lowland Gamo region with the highland region. Most children lack sufficient food to survive.

Prayer Items

Pray for the physical needs for clean water and medical clinics to be met.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to do a mighty work in Gamo churches and families, bringing many to total faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that soon Gamo people will take the gospel to nearby unreached peoples like the Hamars.
