Introduction / History

The Greek in Uruguay are either born in Greece or fully or partially of Greek descent. The first major wave of Greek immigrants arrived in the country in the late 1920s, and the second in the 1950s and 1960s, after the Greek Civil War. Today, there are more than 3,500 second or third-generation Greek immigrants, as well as a large number of natives who speak the Greek language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many of the Greek in Uruguay live in the Montevideo area. There is a Greek community center and a Greek Orthodox Church of Saint Nikolaos. Another important Greek institution in Montevideo is the Maria Tsakos Foundation, which offers Greek language lessons. The Foundation also organizes Greek dances, cooking, and other cultural activities.

According to former president of Uruguay Luis Alberto Lacalle de Herrera, “Greeks in Uruguay are very important, they do well in business, and they are in the teaching system so they have really meshed with the country.”

What Are Their Beliefs?

Greeks in Uruguay are Greek Orthodox. They believe in the basics of Christianity but often take their focus off the only savior, Jesus Christ.
