Introduction / History

There are many small tribal communities in the Philippines. Language is a key distinguishing characteristic between each of them. One of these communities, the Lapuyan Subanen, has its own language called Southern Subanen. Lapuyan is one of the subgroups of the greater Subanen people.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Almost all tribal groups in the Philippines are engaged in farming and cultivating corn, maize, vegetables, tobacco and coffee. On their farms, they also raise domestic animals such as dogs, goats and chickens. They have their own culture with their own traditional dances and music. Most Lapuyan Subanen villages have a headman or chief who acts as a judge over disputes.

Most Lapuyan Subanen villages are organized in clusters around individual gardens. The extended family arranges marriages with members from another community, allowing for traditions and lifestyles to combine. Depending on the influence of outside trends, the clothing of the community varies. Some wear simple clothing with basic fabrics while others wear popular styles.

What Are Their Beliefs?

There are communities of believers among the Lapuyan Subanen, but this is the minority. Most have beliefs traditional to their culture and worship Mulu, a local deity.

What Are Their Needs?

These communities need strong healthcare and educational systems. Other basic needs such as housing and nutrition also need improvement.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Lapuyan Subanen are emboldened to further connect with their neighbors and build strong communities.
Pray that all their needs are met and that they have clear minds to care and love one another.
