Introduction / History

The Kannada-speaking Hindu Raya Rawat people live primarily in southern Karnataka, India. Historically, they have been involved in agriculture and livestock rearing, relying on the region's fertile land to sustain their livelihoods. Over time, the Raya Rawat community has adapted to changing economic conditions, but many continue to depend on traditional farming and pastoral work for their income.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Raya Rawat people engage in agriculture, growing crops such as rice, millet and sugarcane. Livestock rearing also plays a significant role, with families raising cattle, goats and poultry. Farming is central to their daily lives, with family members working together in the fields. Many Raya Rawat families live in villages, where they build homes from local materials like mud, brick and thatch.

Life in the community revolves around farming, family responsibilities and religious practices. Although younger generations are increasingly seeking education and employment in nearby towns, most families remain tied to agriculture. Those who have moved to urban areas often return to help with farming during peak seasons.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Raya Rawat people practice Hinduism, worshiping deities like Vishnu, Shiva and local gods associated with agriculture and nature. Religious festivals such as Diwali, Ugadi and Makar Sankranti are major events, where families come together to offer prayers and celebrate the harvest.

Temples and shrines are central to their religious life, serving as places of worship and community gathering. Rituals and ceremonies are often tied to the agricultural calendar, with prayers for good rains, successful harvests and the well-being of livestock playing an important role.

What Are Their Needs?

The Raya Rawat people face challenges related to economic development, education and healthcare. Many families still rely on traditional farming methods, making them vulnerable to environmental changes, such as droughts or floods. Access to modern farming tools, irrigation systems and training in sustainable agricultural practices would improve their economic stability and resilience.

Education remains limited in rural areas, with many children having to travel long distances for quality schooling. Expanding access to education and improving school infrastructure would provide the younger generation with more opportunities for employment outside of agriculture. Healthcare services are also insufficient, with families often needing to travel to larger towns for medical treatment. Improving healthcare infrastructure and accessibility in their communities would enhance their overall well-being.

Prayer Points

Pray for God’s divine intervention in the Raya Rawat community to know and accept Christ as their only lord.
Pray for God to soften their hearts and to know that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
Pray for more Christian communities to grow in their location to show them the blessings of a Christ-centered life.
