Introduction / History

The Eurba (also spelled Eupa or Eurpa) are a subgroup of the Akha people, an ethnic minority primarily residing in in the mountainous regions of northern Laos, particularly in Phongsaly Province near the Laos-Myanmar border. The Eurba are part of the broader Akha population, which also lives in China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. The Eurba are distinct from other Akha subgroups, though they share historical kinship. The larger Akha tribe migrated from China, likely in the 16th or 17th centuries fleeing unrest, and also later in the 20th century.

The language of the Akha is part of the Tibeto-Burman family, and they maintain an oral tradition without a written script. All Akha subgroups speak dialects of the Akha language. Dialects vary, but most understand the jeu g’oe dialect used in southern China, Thailand, and Myanmar. While some of the tribes interact with one another, they remain distinct. Sometimes significant language differences exist with some groups; they speak completely unintelligible languages to other Akha. The gospel does not naturally flow from one Akha group to the next.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Eurba are rice farmers, raise chickens, pigs, water buffalos, and goats. They live in traditional wooden houses without running water or electricity, though some villages have adopted solar panels for basic lighting. Their villages are often accessible only by multi-day treks from towns like Phongsaly. The Eurba lead a simple, agrarian life, cultivating rice and working on coffee plantations, some of which are operated by Chinese companies. Akha society, including the Eurba, is patriarchal, with women having limited rights and primarily responsible for household tasks. Women and girls often wear traditional clothing, including indigo-colored costumes with silver coins indicating household wealth, while men have largely adopted Western-style clothing. The Eurba celebrate events like the New Year ceremony, led by a village shaman, which includes communal gatherings, sacrifices, and traditional massages for guests.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Akha Eurba are animists and ancestor worshippers, practicing rituals involving animal sacrifices to appease spirits. In Eurba villages, altars with animal remains are visible. They believe offerings like dog intestines ward off evil spirits,. Sacrifices are central to events like welcoming guests or resolving spiritual imbalances. In Eurba villages, shamans remain central to healing, as modern healthcare is often inaccessible.

What Are Their Needs?

Like most people in rural Laos, the Eurba’s remote location limits access to healthcare, education, and modern amenities. Villages often lack toilets, running water, or medical facilities. The Akha, including the Eurba, face rights abuses in Laos, particu
