The Valmiki, named after the author of the Ramayana, claim descent from him. Historically, they were known to be a martial caste and also served in the British Army during colonial times. Today, the Valmiki community still serves in the armed forces. The majority of the Valmiki community lives in India, with smaller percentages in Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. Their languages include Saraiki, Western Punjabi and Sindhi. Their major religion is Hinduism, although some in Punjab converted to Sikhism, and some others converted to Islam during the Mogul period. The Valmiki community’s livelihood comes from lower societal positions, working in labor-intensive jobs.
The Valmiki faced significant systemic barriers, which included restricted access to education, lack of modern medicine and restricted social mobility. The rural areas end up suffering from high child mortality rates and lower life expectancy. Valmiki girls often leave school early to learn domestic duties, further increasing gender inequality. Their deep devotion to Hinduism makes them resistant to accepting the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Pray for anointed workers and church planters to share Christ's love with the Valmiki in India and Pakistan.
Pray for Valmiki community leaders to have open hearts to embrace the gospel of Jesus Christ and a powerful Christian movement.
Pray the Holy Spirit will lead the Valmiki community to engage with Christian resources, such as radio programs, gospel recordings and the JESUS Film.
Pray for increased literacy, education and better access to healthcare for Valmiki communities.
