Introduction / History

The name Larteh means fire stone. They also go by Gua. They have been native to Ghana as far back as 1500 BC. There are archeological records and more recent oral histories. The latter indicates they once lived in the savannas. Some lived further north in the Mossi area, where they sold pottery, spices and gold. When the Ghana Empire began to erode, they were attacked by Berbers from the north. Eventually, things settled, and they had 200 years of peace. The 1500s were eventful for the Lartehs. Mande warriors from the Songhay Empire invaded to take their gold. Some Larteh moved south and southeast.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Every September and October, the Larteh celebrate Odwira. This brings in many from other parts of Ghana to witness the festivities. It involves ceremonies and rituals, but there are also recreational activities. It is a time to display Larteh art. The Larteh, even those who live in other countries, come together to celebrate themes of victory, gratitude and harvest.

Many prominent people in Ghana are from the Lartehs. They have a medical pioneer, the director of a school of law and politicians.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Although about a quarter of the Lartehs are Christian, most of them are hindered by traditional religion. Traditional religion put their faith in the spirit world.

What Are Their Needs?

The Larteh need some vibrant, faithful Christians among them who will display the character of Christ and disciple others in his ways.
