Introduction / History

The Gumalu people live 35 kilometers (20 miles) west of Madang town, the provincial capital. They retain their Gumalu language as their primary language. Their language is related to that of five other people groups in their area.
Thank God that one of these groups, the Amele, have the New Testament. The Amele are also highly literate. Could the Amele people help bring the Bible to their neighboring people groups, including the Gumalu?

What Are Their Lives Like?

Only one in four Gumalu people can read with comprehension. Schools do not use the Gumalu language, making it difficult for children to begin to learn the basics of literacy and numeracy. Ask God to bless the Gumalu children with teachers who use the Gumalu language, who love God and who teach well. Ask the Lord for an oral translation of the Bible that all Gumalu people will be able to access, even if they cannot read.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all are Christian, but their spiritual lives would be greatly enhanced if they could read the Bible in their own language.

What Are Their Needs?

Almost half the Gumalu population are under 15 years old, and most won't live to 60. Malaria, dysentery and preventable infections are common causes of death.

Prayer Points

Pray for their health and for adequate medical facilities.
Ask the Lord of the harvest to thrust out workers to translate his word into the Gumalu language.
Pray that the Gumalu people would hunger and thirst for righteousness and be satisfied.
