Kashubian history began over 750 years ago. Theirs was a large duchy in the 13th century, but after this time came great troubles for Kashubian people. Germanization was a big problem. During the Second World War, many Kashubians died because of persecution and war. The collapse of communism in 1989 brought them freedom, but after this year much of Kashubians suffered from poverty and unemployment. This fact caused Kashubian emigration to Western countries. Most Kashubians live in Poland, but there is a big groups of Kashubian immigrants in Canada. The first Kashubians came to Canada in 1858.
Kashubians in Canada have maintained some of their culture through food. They are fond of soups, one of which contains goat blood and another is apple-based. They have their own music and dances, which they enjoy at special events.
They are trying to maintain their language in Canada, but the younger generation is learning French and English, the Canadian trade languages. Since they came from Poland, they are sometimes mistaken for Poles.
Most Kashubians religious life is dominated by the Roman Catholic Church. The collapse of communism was a big cultural shock. Many Kashubians have a conservative worldview, often without good understanding of Bible. The great influence of relativism is observed by the younger generation. Some Kashubians are also influenced by materialism.
Kashubians are facing an identity crisis. They have been in Canada for many generation, but it s possible that they will lose their language and culture.
