The Sissala are a small group in south-central Burkina Faso, located on the Ghanaian border. The main occupation for the Sissala is subsistence farming. They benefit from the region's quite favorable climate, receiving an annual rainfall of between 35-40 inches or 900 to 1,000 mm.
The Sissala's response to literacy in their mother tongue has been good. While in certain of Burkina Faso's ethnic groups it takes years to motivate even a small percentage to learn to read and write their language, the Sissala have been more keen. Even after the departure of the expatriate literacy consultant, the program has carried on. In the area of Bible translation, the Sissala have also shown much initiative. The translation work has largely been carried out by two Sissala pastors. The New Testament was published in 1999.
