Introduction / History

The traditional occupations of the Mahtam Hindus were farming, hunting wild boars, fishing and liquor distillation. They were associated with rope making, since ropes were used by them with their hunting efforts. They have been known as cultivators and clearers of the jungle, and there are many differing stories of their origins. This community is scattered all over India. The term Mahtam is usually for Hindus or Muslims.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today they are primarily farmers, but many are engaged in other trades as well. In Rajasthan the Mahtam are mainly landowners. Many hold either blue or white collar jobs. They maintain cordial relationships with the scheduled castes and other artisan and service castes of the nearby villages. A committee settles social disputes for them. They allow for divorce and remarriage. Sons inherit the family property. Upon the death of the father, the oldest son becomes the family head.

What Are Their Beliefs?

This Mahtam people practices Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mahtam need to seek and find the Lord of lords who alone can forgive sin and offer life to the full.

Prayer Points

Pray for dedicated workers and intercessors. Pray for spiritual hunger that will lead them to the only Savior. Pray that Indian believers will lead the Mahtam to begin their own movement to Christ.
