Introduction / History

There are three dialects of Croatian, one of which is Chakavian. In both Croatia and Austria, they are defined by their heart language.

Chakavians and other Croatians came to Burgenland (in Austria) in the 1530s-80s. They were fleeing the Ottoman Empire.

After communism fell in Croatia, followed by a civil war, some, including Chakavian speakers, went to Austria and other parts of Western Europe where they could find high-paying jobs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Croatia experienced a brain drain; the most educated people left. The Croatian government is trying to draw many of these people back to Croatia.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Chakavians are traditional Christians. Some attend church services, but not enough have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

Chakavians need disciplers; people who will teach them the ways of Christ and how to share these ways with others.

Pray for faith in Christ to unify many in Croatia and Austria.
