Introduction / History

The Dutch speak Dutch, a Germanic language which defines them as a people. They are from the Netherlands, made up of 12 provinces, two of which carry the name Holland.

The Dutch urbanized sooner than other ethnic groups in Europe. Though the Netherlands is small in land mass, it has a long history as a maritime and colonial power. The Dutch had important colonial holdings in Indonesia, South Africa, Suriname, and Aruba, thus influencing three continents.

For many reasons, the Dutch have settled in 30 countries, including Belgium. A high percentage of the people in Belgium speak Dutch. Along with standard Dutch, they speak West Flemish, East Flemish, Brabantian and Limburgish, all Dutch dialects.

What Are Their Lives Like?

For hundreds of years, the Dutch have preferred an urban lifestyle. Most Dutch are there for educational or business purposes. Their language is replacing French as the primary language in Belgium.
