Introduction / History

The Dutch speak Dutch, a Germanic language which defines them as a people. They are from the Netherlands, made up of 12 provinces, two of which carry the name Holland.

The Dutch urbanized sooner than other ethnic groups in Europe. Though the Netherlands is small in land mass, it has a long history as a maritime and colonial power. The Dutch had important colonial holdings in Indonesia, South Africa, Suriname, and Aruba, thus influencing three continents.

For many reasons, the Dutch have settled in 30 countries, including New Zealand. Most of the ethnic Dutch came to New Zealand after WWII.

What Are Their Lives Like?

For hundreds of years, the Dutch have preferred an urban lifestyle. They have made their mark in New Zealand through journalism, politics, religious service, engineering and architecture. Others have excelled in the arts.
