Jobs were scarce for Australians in 1893. A group of sheep sheers, spurred on by socialist ideologues, decided to emigrate to Paraguay. This South American country had lost 90 percent of their men during a recent war, so they offered a liberal amount of fertile land. Almost all the first Australian settlers were men.
There were two Australian settlements, one of which included women and children. They wanted to establish a utopian communist society. The colony failed, and most returned to Australia within a couple of years. A few remained. They are the forefathers of today’s Anglo-Australians in Paraguay.
Today there are only a small number of Paraguayans from Australia. Many have an identity issue; they aren’t fully Australian or Paraguayan.
Anglo-Australians are usually Christian, and there is a strong Evangelical minority among them. Like most people, Anglo-Australians don’t allow the Lord the central part of their lives.
Anglo-Australians in Paraguay need to take the opportunity to be Christ’s hands and feet in South America.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to radically transform Anglo-Australian churches.
Pray for Anglo-Australian disciples to make many more disciples in Paraguay.
Pray for Christ’s will to be done in Paraguay as it is in heaven.
