Introduction / History

The Waimiri-Atroari language is one of the Yanomami languages. They are one of the Carib peoples. They are also known as Waimiri Atroari or Waimiri-Atrorari. Their homeland is in northern Brazil’s state of Amazonas.

They have a long, tragic history of contact with outsiders who want to use their land. In the 1970s-80s the Brazilian government used Waimiri-Atroari land to construct a highway and a dam. The people were displaced.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Waimiri-Atroari people are in the process of adapting to having their homeland controlled by outsiders. There are efforts to protect their land, but the most powerful forces come from outsiders.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They have their own ethnic religion that involves the worship of nature spirits.

What Are Their Needs?

This tribe needs to learn new skills so they can adapt to their new situation.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Lord to bless this community economically and spiritually.

Ask God to raise up Waimiri-Atroari who are more desirous to know the truth than to stay on the broad road.

Ask God to send loving, committed workers to the Waimiri-Atroari in the near future.

Pray the Waimiri-Atroari would no longer be hidden away from the influence of Christ.

Pray for many of them to make disciples who will make even more disciples.
