The Zapotec of the Isthmus are one of the largest indigenous peoples living in Mexico. They live in many small villages located in the Isthmus region of southeast Oaxaca. They are one of the original four indigenous groups the Bible League began working in. The Zapotec living in the northeast, central and southern regions of Oaxaca speak over 50 different dialects.
The traditional dress that the Zapotecs wear depends on the region of Oaxaca they are from. They include variations of solid primary colors made from natural tints. Women wear blouses tied with ribbons and long skirts. The Zapotecs of the Isthmus are considered rebellious and trouble makers by the government. The political system is affected by conflicting issues between opposing political groups.
Zapotecs of the Isthmus are strongly rooted in Catholicism. They are dedicated to their many celebrations honoring the different saints that they recognize. They also believe in witchcraft and the occult. A small but growing number are evangelical Christian.
Homosexuality, effeminacy and transvestism are accepted norms for a segment of the society. Many openly practicing homosexuals have been selected by the people to hold positions of authority.
Pray for the Zapotec of the Isthmus Christians that have been trained. Pray that they would be brave in presenting the Gospel in their own communities.
Pray that the Zapotec would turn from homosexuality by the power of God.
Pray that the Zapotec of the Isthmus will by touched by the Holy Spirit when they hear the salvation message.
