Introduction / History

In their earlier history the Jebero were warrior-headhunters who ate the livers and hearts of those whom they defeated in battle. By the 1640s they had to flee to a Catholic mission to avoid attacks and enslavement by other indigenous groups. The Jebero left to resume farming on their own land, but their land was not fertile, so they returned to the mission. The population of the Jebero people was greatly reduced in the early 20th century because rubber tappers encroached on their land.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Today only the older people speak their traditional Jebero language. Almost all the Jebero people speak Quichua or Spanish. Most likely their language will not survive much longer. They are well-assimilated into mestizo ways.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Over half the Jebero people are Roman Catholic.

What Are Their Needs?

The Jebero people need to find a way to maintain their culture while seeking and finding the King of kings.
