Introduction / History

The Ndau are historically related to the Karanga, but they have their own language. Ndau comes from a greeting in their language. Their language, surnames and culture have been influenced by the Nguni tribe. In the 1820s, the Nguni raiders came south and took Ndau women as captive wives. Later there was much intermarriage between the two ethnic groups. Today the Ndau are related to the Shona and Shangaan tribes in southern Africa. They are well-represented in both Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Like most peoples in southern Africa, the Ndau are agricultural. They grow crops and raise livestock. The Ndau people have to deal with serious theft issues in their part of Africa.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Ndau are noted for being herbalists, but they also excel in black magic. Zimbabweans fear their curses. Like many peoples in southern Africa, the Ndau depend on protective and guiding ancestral spirits.

They also have a Christian influence, but it can be tainted by dark spiritual practices.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nadau people need to put their hope and trust in Jesus Christ rather than practicing magic. Dark spirits will make demands on them; their only defense is the power of Jesus.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Ndau people to be released from black magic and dark spirits.

May they put their trust in the holy and loving savior rather than the spirit world.

Pray for Ndau disciples to make more disciples who will make even more disciples.
