Introduction / History

Zambos are part African and part Native American. In Colombia, they also call them Afro-Colombian. Their ancestors were African slaves who worked on plantations and in mines. There was the Free Birth Law in 1821, and slavery was eliminated in Colombia by 1852. By that time most African slaves were already free because they bought their freedom or because they escaped during a revolt.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Zambos are trying to keep their culture, music, traditions and language alive. Music is an important part of their culture.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Almost all of Colombia s Zambo people are Christians. A few of these are Evangelical; the rest are Roman Catholic.

What Are Their Needs?

Zambos have a high rate of poverty and a low educational level. About three-fourths earn less than minimum wage.

Pray for the Holy Spirit to revive their church, leading them to follow Christ faithfully and make active disciples.
Pray their fellowships would be centered on Christ and biblical truth.
Ask God to give them a spiritual hunger and a discernment that will protect them from spiritual counterfeits.
Ask the Lord of the harvest to send loving workers into His field, strengthening the faith of his people.
