The Hakki Pikki tribe traditionally lived in remote areas where they managed to find enough food and materials for clothing to survive. As their South Asian homelands in southern India and Sri Lanka become more congested, they are being moved to other areas where they must learn to live very different lives.
Most live in India where they are battling to have their own farmland and identity after being removed from their homes in the forest. A smaller number live in Sri Lanka.
Almost all the information about this group has to do with their lives in southern India, but we can infer that those who live in Sri Lanka face some of the same challenges. Small tribes that have lived off the land for generations are having a very difficult time adjusting to being moved off their land and into either urban or farming areas.
The Hakki Pikki are officially Hindus, but because of their tribal background, they are probably more devoted to their traditional gods than to those of the Hindu pantheon. However, it should be noted that Hinduism allows for the flexibility of worshiping other spirit beings. Hinduism does not have the same structure and foundational beliefs of either Christianity or Islam.
The Hakki Pikki people in Sri Lanka probably need help in adjusting to the modern world of advanced farming techniques.
