Their name means, "bird catcher," because they are known for their ability to catch birds. The Hakki Pikki believe their original ancestor was the legendary Ranapratap Singh and that they are from a Kshatriya or warrior background. They believe their ancestors migrated to southern India after being defeated by the Moghuls. They are a scheduled tribe which means they have low status. They have four clans.
The Hakki Pikki are semi nomadic. These hunters make these slings, as they are also expert to catch birds and animals. They are non-vegetarians and they mostly catch their prey themselves. Their children do not get enough education to compete in India's modernizing economy. However, the Hakki Pikki are known to learn a number of languages which helps them barter at a local level.
The Hakki Pikki depend on selling their crafts and low-cost wares. During the Covid 19 crisis, they faced major difficulties because of the lockdown.
Though they are official Hindu, that label is a catch all for the various indigenous religions of South Asia. The Hakki Pikki have their own deities.
The Hakki Pikki need the Holy Spirit to empower them to open their eyes and see Jesus.
