Katuena was a generic term for tribal peoples encountered by Roman Catholic missionaries in the mid 1800s. Even with their small population, the Katuenas have a couple of dialects of their language, Waiwai. Their elders are trying to keep their language alive to preserve their culture, but the younger generation is learning Portuguese so they can interact with the outside world.
Like many tribes in Brazil, the Katuenas have been killed or displaced to make way for the rubber industry. Through their history, they have been noted for their resilience.
The Katuenas are trying to survive as they face land encroachment and deforestation in their homeland.
Though there is a significant Roman Catholic influence, the Katuenas are primarily involved with traditional religion. One of their practices involves secreting medicine from a certain kind of frog. They consider this sacred.
The Katuenas need protection during these decades of uncertainty. They will probably need job training as they are forced off their land into sprawling cities.
Pray for the Lord s protection of the Katuenas. May they respond with gratitude and devotion.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move in Katuena families, drawing both fathers and mothers to the only savior, Jesus Christ.
Pray for a spiritual revival to take place in Katuena communities.
Pray that soon Katuena disciples will make more disciples.
